Summary of the Event:
The Alternative Olympic Torch Relay for road peace will be the cycling event of 2012 starting in Bulgaria on 7 June, and arriving for the opening of the Olympics - 27 July 2012. It is an international 50-day-long biking tour across 10 countries (Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and United Kingdom) to promote safer roads and cycling.
This event is inspired by the veteran Bulgarian cyclist and sportsman Mladen Belchev, who was planning to cycle the 3500km from Bulgaria to London by himself but suffered a serious road accident in 2011. Mladen will attempt to cycle the marathon despite his injuries.
Many European cyclists will be joining him to promote cycling, safer roads, sustainable transport and the EuroVelo cycling route network. The relay will also offer Olympic Ticket Holders to cycle safely from Europe to the Olympics.
