The need for entrepreneurship in South Korea

Posted on Sunday 30 January 2011 at 15:57PM by SangJin

This week's guest blogger is SangJin. SangJin is an international student currently studying Biochemistry at Imperial College London.

Half of South Korea’s export revenue comes from semiconductors, which is in high demand as a component for electrical equipments. Samsung dominates the semiconductor market, but for how will they be able to control the market share? For how long will semiconductors be in demand? What would happen if semiconductors were no longer in demand?

Considering the size of Korea’s export revenue, specializing in semiconductors has its risks. In a world where we cannot even predict what will happen tomorrow, the risk adds on. Korea is already at the top of the league for electronics, cars, construction and ship building and these four industries have contributed enormously to Korea’s economy. The Korean government is only interested in supporting existing oligopolies instead of supporting small middle sized companies. I ask which industries will be able to lead Korea in next 50 years and next 100 years. Will it be construction, electronics, ship building or cars? I do not think so.

Korea desperately needs second, third and fourth generation of entrepreneurs to develop new products that can compete in the global market or I see no future in Korea. Right now I see no future. And I propose some changes in Korea.

For growth of entrepreneurship:

  1. Society needs an environment in which failure can be supported and accepted. It is unreasonable to ask for success in short period of time or from a single try. Productions of Drugs, for example, take 15 years to develop and many of them often are denied by the FDA, but development of one single drug could change the whole market.
  2. Entrepreneurship naturally needs money to start the business or for organic growth. This requires a system in which there are angel investors or government loans at an interest rate lower than usual. In other words, lots of capital.
  3. High concentration of high caliber students in one place is needed for discussion of plausible ideas and to create powerful synergy in which students abilities are used most efficiently. This would also imply that the students would not matriculate in college for medicine and law because these two careers are more stable and financially rewarding.
I am sure there are many more requirements both from the individual and society for entrepreneurship to prosper. Please feel free to add more!
