About Open Cinema
Open Cinema is a nationwide network of film clubs programmed by and for homeless and socially excluded people. Each week participants watch the best in contemporary cinema and work with professional filmmakers to create films of their own.
Films are regularly introduced by the filmmakers themselves. Recent guests have included Ken Loach [Kes, The Wind That Shakes the Barley], Kevin Macdonald [The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void], Stephen Frears [High Fidelity, The Queen] and Mike Leigh [Happy Go Lucky, Vera Drake].
Our philosophy is that people excluded from society need the benefits of culture as much as advice and food. Open Cinema takes film to people at the margins, and brings them and their aspirations to the centre of cultural life.
